Dear Friends:

Let me start by thanking the hundreds of attendees at our Annual Conference and Final Action Hearings for your participation in the business of the Code Council. Our award winners inspired us, the tributes moved us, and we all left with a greater sense of hope and community as motivation for the year ahead. As busy as our Conference gets, it does recharge our batteries and remind us that there is more to do.

I encourage you look at our Annual Report, provided online for the first time this year, for a look back on what we’ve accomplished in the last 12 months. We’ve laid the foundation for our two newest codes addressing green construction and swimming pool safety, our scholarship program for attendees to our hearings is maturing, more nations around the world are utilizing our codes and services, and our professional development programs are evolving into new approaches designed to keep pace with our diverse membership.

As we approach the holiday season, it’s also appropriate to restate our thanks to the hard working members of our organization. On a daily basis, the commitment to safe and sustainable communities continues to save lives but does not get much public attention. This commitment includes a great passion for the mission, an ongoing focus on fairness and customer service, and an acknowledgement that criticism comes faster than praise. The fact that buildings can either protect us or harm us continues to amaze. Footage from India, Haiti and other venues emphasizes that codes and those who enforce them are essential to our well-being.

My focus will continue to be on reaching out to our chapters and meeting with organizations who wish to partner with us in our mission to build a safer world. Also, your new Board is very focused on supporting the Code Council’s work on many fronts as we enter the new year, including the review of our code development process and approving a budget that provides essential resources to not only maintain but grow our capabilities.

So one more time – thank you. I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming year.

Best wishes,

Rick Weiland
