Organization Out of Chaos: Using ICS to Manage Major Projects continued When projects grow in complexity, though, having this tool can make the code official’s job a lot easier and less stressful. By delegating and coordinating manageable assignments, communicating through regular channels*, and using organized record keeping, the IC-code official can be more confident all the work is accomplished in a thorough and professional manner, no matter the time constraints. SUMMARY The Incident Command System has a long and successful history in the fire service and in other emergency response agencies. It can be scaled up or down depending upon the complexity of an event or project. While it may seem complicated at first, once code officials learn to use it, they will realize how well it helps make sure all the “i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed” before a project is finalized. Adapting ICS to a certificate of occupancy close-out is a simple procedure that will improve project coordination and communication. Code officials can learn more about how they can apply ICS to their day-to-day operations by contacting their partner fire officials. Large and complicated places of assembly—like the New York New York casino in Las Vegas—often undergo continuous change. Without a well-organized permit and inspection team, important details may be overlooked. PHOTO COURTESY OF ROB NEALE *ICS does not prohibit “cross discipline” communication. If an electrical inspector finds a faulty gas service, he or she does not have to go all the way up the chain of command to report it or get advice on how to handle it. The solid-line organization chart is intended to minimize cross discipline “chatter” and increase communication efficiency. —*ADVERTISEMENT— —*ADVERTISEMENT— OCTOBER 2016 | 34 Testing Laboratories Accredited by IAS Give Building Departments Confidence · What is accreditation? · Why should testing laboratories be accredited? · How do you learn if a laboratory is accredited by IAS? · What is involved in the process to assess labs for accreditation? · What is the standard for determining the competence of testing laboratories?
