It seems only last week when I stood before you, honored and blessed to be sworn in as your Board President by my son, Alexander C. Olszowy IV, Navy Petty Officer, 2nd class, with the Naval Support Unit in Arlington, Virginia. Also with me on the stage in Long Beach were four men who were instrumental in my development as a Building Official: • Jeff Camp, President of the Code Administrators Association of Kentucky, and Chief Building Inspector for Elizabethtown, Kentucky, • Dewey Crowe, Director of Building Inspection, for Lexington, Kentucky, • Ron Dill, Life Director of the Code Administrators Association of Kentucky, and Director of General Services and Assistant City Administrator for Fort Thomas, Kentucky, • And George Mann, Retired Deputy Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. These men not only are friends, but mentors who helped me throughout my career. It’s safe to say I would not be the person I am today without them. That’s why the Code Council’s 2016 theme, “Next Generation, Safety 2.0,” was so timely and critical. Mentoring must continue to be an important part of our jobs. We often have heard how we will be losing many Building and Code Officials to retirement in the next several years. Who will carry on our important work if we do not help bring in and develop the next generation of officials? We have made strides in this regard. Our High School Technical Training Program continues to grow, exposing young people to the importance of building and fire safety, as well as the many possible careers associated with our industry. We had other successes of which I am proud this year, as well. At the White House Earthquake Resiliency Summit in February, it was announced President Obama had signed an Executive Order requiring all new and leased and regulated federal buildings comply with the seismic design provisions of the 2015 International Building and Residential Codes.
